Link roundup: conservative Christian prayer efforts ramp up

As Election Day approaches, conservative Christian groups are mounting a wide array of prayer initiatives. Several of them started last week and intend to pray for 40 days (depending on how they count the days) until the election.

Most of these initiatives are presenting their message primarily in religious terms, not partisan ones. There’s also a lot less direct language of spiritual warfare than we saw in the DC 40 campaign. The favorite language here is about “solemn assemblies” and “crying out to God.”

While there’s some …

Army chaplain leads sectarian prayer during suicide prevention event

Reports from Fort Sam Houston indicate soldiers attending a mandatory training session intended to address the problem of military suicides were led in an explicitly Christian prayer by a chaplain without an opportunity to opt out. One of the soldiers attending, staff sergeant Victoria Gettman, is an atheist who recognized this as an egregious violation and contacted Sgt Justin Griffith, the Military Director of American Atheists, who broke the story on his blog. Sgt Griffith spoke with PNC about this issue. He does not speak …

9/11: A Pagan Reflection

Elsewhere on the web, you’ll find a variety of thoughts and reflections today on the events of 9/11/2001.  I remember that I was walking home from class and passed a housemate of mine who told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center towers.  I imagined a small plane, perhaps a Cesna, and was momentarily struck by the thought of such a horrible accident before I continued home.

The idea that it was a plan executed by religious extremists never entered my mind.

Missouri Amendment 2: A Trojan Horse for (Christian) Government & School Prayer

On Tuesday, Missourians will have an amendment to their state constitution on the ballot. The official summary reads:

Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to ensure:

That the right of Missouri citizens to express their religious beliefs shall not be infringed;
That school children have the right to pray and acknowledge God voluntarily in their schools; and
That all public schools shall display the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution.

Sounds pretty unobjectionable, right? Wrong: this measure is just the latest in a long line of Trojan horse …

Several themes from the first part show up here again as well, with the overall result being promotion of a culture and society that are permeated by extremely conservative Christian attitudes and requirements.

Day 13 is set aside for prayer against “Thinking …

DC 40 Releases First Part of Prayer Guide

Although James Nesbit, director of DC 40, spent as much space in his newsletter yesterday addressing Pagans as he did writing to his own followers, he also announced the release of the first part of the DC 40 prayer guide, which demonstrates the initiative’s commitment to the principles of Christian Dominionism.

The guide is entitled Declaration of Dependence: How To Heal Our Nation Through Prayer and written by Dr. Marlene McMillan. It is also being released as a book, but the PDF “sneak peek” on the …

DC40 Writes: “The point is our intent. Intent is a force.”

The latest announcement from leaders of the DC40 initiative makes it clear that they want to try to use focused intent to create change – what most Pagans would describe as magic. As part of their effort to affect “the spiritual atmosphere” over DC, they now ask followers to use mobile devices to “release the frequency of oxygen” by using an app to play the sound of a ringing bell every hour.

James Nesbit, one of the people maintaining the email list for people who want …
